What is the ESAT and which courses require it?

The ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) is now used by both Cambridge and Oxford. Cambridge uses it for Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine. From 2027 entry, Oxford uses it for Physics, Physics & Philosophy, and Engineering Science.

Why is Oxford now using the ESAT?

Oxford announced in January 2026 that it would replace its in-house PAT (Physics Aptitude Test) with the ESAT for 2027 entry onwards. This is part of a broader shift to UAT-UK administered tests. Both PAT and NSAA/ENGAA past papers are excellent ESAT preparation.

What is the format of the ESAT?

The ESAT consists of multiple-choice questions testing mathematics and science subjects. The exact format depends on your chosen course - Physics and Engineering applicants focus on maths and physics, while Natural Sciences applicants may include biology and chemistry.

How should I prepare for the ESAT?

Review your A-Level mathematics and science content thoroughly. Practice with past PAT, NSAA, and ENGAA papers as these cover similar content. Focus on problem-solving under time pressure and learn to work quickly and accurately.

When should I take the ESAT?

The ESAT is typically taken in October, before the UCAS deadline. Registration opens in the summer through UAT-UK via Pearson VUE. Hong Kong students should plan to take the test at an approved test center.

Are PAT, NSAA and ENGAA past papers still relevant?

Yes, past PAT, NSAA, and ENGAA papers are all excellent preparation for the ESAT as they test similar skills and content at a comparable level. The problem-solving approaches are directly transferable.
