What is the TMUA and which universities use it?

The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is now used by Oxford (from 2027 entry), Cambridge, Durham, LSE, Warwick, Sheffield, Southampton, and other universities for mathematics and related courses.

Why is Oxford now using the TMUA?

Oxford announced in January 2026 that it would replace its in-house MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test) with the TMUA for 2027 entry onwards. From October 2026 applications, Oxford Mathematics, Maths & Statistics, Maths & Computer Science, and Computer Science all require TMUA.

What is the format of the TMUA?

The TMUA consists of two 75-minute papers, each with 20 multiple-choice questions. Paper 1 tests mathematical thinking and applications. Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning and proof. Both papers cover A-Level content.

What is a good TMUA score?

TMUA scores range from 1.0 to 9.0. A score of 6.5+ is generally considered strong. For Oxford and Cambridge, scores above 7.0 are competitive. However, the TMUA is just one part of your application.

Are MAT past papers useful for TMUA preparation?

Yes, MAT past papers are excellent preparation as they test advanced mathematical reasoning at a similar level. The problem-solving and proof skills developed through MAT practice are directly transferable to TMUA.

How should I prepare for the TMUA?
