    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the UCAT and who needs to take it?

The UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is a compulsory admissions test for most UK medical and dental schools. It is used alongside academic qualifications and personal statements to select candidates for interview. Most UK medical schools require UCAT scores, making it essential for Hong Kong students applying to study medicine in the UK.

What sections are in the UCAT?

From 2025, the UCAT consists of four sections: Verbal Reasoning (22 minutes, 44 questions), Decision Making (37 minutes, 35 questions), Quantitative Reasoning (26 minutes, 36 questions), and Situational Judgement (26 minutes, 69 questions). Abstract Reasoning has been removed. Total: 184 questions in 111 minutes.

How should I use these UCAT practice papers?

Start by completing one paper untimed to understand the question types. Then practice under timed conditions, as time pressure is a major challenge in UCAT. Review all answers thoroughly, especially incorrect ones. Aim to complete at least 5-8 full practice tests before your actual exam.

What is a good UCAT score for UK medical schools?

With the 2025 format change (max score now 2,700), a competitive UCAT score is typically 2,400+ out of 2,700, with Band 1 or 2 in Situational Judgement. Top schools may expect scores of 2,500+. Score cutoffs are being recalibrated, so research your target universities' specific requirements.

When should I take the UCAT?

The UCAT test window runs from July to October each year. We recommend taking it in August or early September to allow time for retakes if needed and to focus on other application components. Hong Kong students can take the test at Pearson VUE test centers.
