Is the MAT still used for Oxford admissions?

The MAT is being discontinued for Oxford 2027 entry onwards. Students applying from October 2026 will take the TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) instead. Imperial College still accepts MAT scores—check their current requirements.

What is replacing the MAT for Oxford Maths and Computer Science?

From 2027 entry, Oxford Mathematics, Maths & Statistics, Maths & Computer Science, and Computer Science applicants will take the TMUA instead of the MAT. The TMUA is administered by UAT-UK via Pearson VUE.

Are MAT past papers still useful for TMUA preparation?

Yes, MAT past papers are excellent preparation as they test advanced mathematical reasoning at a similar level. The problem-solving and proof skills developed through MAT practice are directly transferable to TMUA.

What is the format of the MAT?

The MAT is a 2.5-hour written test with 10 multiple-choice questions and 4-6 longer written questions. Questions cover algebra, calculus, geometry, logic, and problem-solving beyond A-Level standard.

How should I prepare for Oxford Mathematics now?

Focus on TMUA preparation materials while also practicing with MAT past papers. Both tests emphasise mathematical reasoning and proof. Complete past papers under timed conditions and focus on writing clear, logical arguments.
