Important: PAT Discontinued for 2027 Entry

Oxford has announced that the PAT (Physics Aptitude Test) will be replaced by the ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) for students applying from October 2026 onwards (2027 entry).

    • Physics and Physics & Philosophy: Now require ESAT
    • Engineering Science: Now requires ESAT
    • Materials Science: No longer requires any admissions test

PAT past papers remain valuable preparation as they test similar physics and maths skills. View ESAT Practice Papers →

    About the PAT

Physics Aptitude Test - Oxford University

    Mathematics Section

Tests algebra, calculus, geometry, and mathematical problem-solving. Questions require application of concepts beyond routine A-Level problems.

    Physics Section

Covers mechanics, waves, electricity, magnetism, and modern physics. Tests conceptual understanding and ability to apply physics principles to novel situations.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PAT still used for Oxford admissions?

The PAT is being discontinued for 2027 entry onwards. Students applying from October 2026 will take the ESAT (Engineering and Science Admissions Test) instead. However, PAT past papers remain valuable preparation as they test similar physics and maths skills.

What is replacing the PAT for Oxford Physics and Engineering?

From 2027 entry, Oxford Physics, Physics & Philosophy, and Engineering Science applicants will take the ESAT instead of the PAT. Materials Science no longer requires any admissions test. The ESAT is administered by UAT-UK via Pearson VUE.

Are PAT past papers still useful for ESAT preparation?

Yes, PAT past papers are excellent preparation for the ESAT as both tests cover similar physics and mathematics content at a comparable level. The problem-solving skills tested are directly transferable.

What is the format of the PAT?

The PAT is a 2-hour written test consisting of mathematics and physics questions. The maths section covers algebra, calculus, and geometry. The physics section tests mechanics, waves, electricity, and other core physics topics.

How should I prepare for Oxford Physics now?

Focus on ESAT preparation materials and practice with both PAT past papers and NSAA/ENGAA past papers. Master A-Level maths and physics content, practice problem-solving under timed conditions, and learn to show your working clearly.
